Dating back to the late 1600's people have said "The Early Bird Catches The Worm".
Well... last night I shut down at about 10:00 pm and relaxed for an hour before bed... 4:30 am Rise & Shine to start my busy day. Figured I would spend my first hour on a blog before moving into my normal routine. Life just loves throwing me curves! Instead of writing my intended piece ActiveRain was DOWN.
That led to all kinds of terrible thoughts. What if the site just disappeared some day? All my new found friends would be gone.... All my blogs no longer readable.... That would be a devastating loss... Next thought was should I be keeping a copy of this stuff, maybe a note book with all articles I have written. Should I print out the profile pages of Associates so I can find them when needed?
Like all worries that fill your mind after a loss it may be short lived. ActiveRain is up and Running.....
But now it is 5:30 am.... Coffee is brewing and my shower awaits..
So much for the blog I was planning to create... It will have to wait!
But my question remains.... Do you back-up your blog?

Wow! That's a scary thought! I have all kinds of quality posts up here w/no backup...
I think I will get on that soo.
But I think AR is only going to grow
Let's keep our fingers crossed!
Top of the morning to ya Dan! I've never thought about it. But suppose that backing it up on a memory stick might be one way.
Geez. The thought of backing up blogs is too much. I do have many of them on Google Base, but they are just links. So, if AR goes down, my Google Base is worthless.
Oh well. I'll just start over again. If AR goes away, I'll pay some attention to my own blog.
Wow.... Goes to show you cannot predict what gets featured. This was an after thought... The one I wrote with hopes of having a chance at a feature can be found HERE... Hint Hint.... Two in one Day?
I never thought of backing up my posts, but I'm thinking about it now. I tends to type right here on line, or in WOrd and do cut and paste. Must check out google docs, too. More to learn here than Real Estate.
Dan: You are like a guilty conscience with all that talk about backing up. Ouch! As for blogwriting, I have found Google's document program to be very blog-friendly. MS Word has messed up several times on my other blog.
Three cheers for Google!
Hello Brother of Mine - back up blogs??? I wouldn't have thought of that until this post. After having lost a few too many that I hate to admit to having done, I do now copy and paste some of them into a word doc and save that. But perhaps I'll now start doing that alot more often.....
Funny how most of us on this, the good coast, are the ones who notice the 4:30-5:30am 'not available' times. And it looks like many of us really are early birds, too.
Two in one day - don't think that happens too often, but who knows.......
OK, back to WORK. ;-)
Ann
Great Question Dan. Alot of effort has been put into their Blogs by alot of folks. What is the best way to back it all up in the event they decided to just pull the plug?
I'm impressed with your running. I was into it 10 years ago and loved it. the day was not complete without a short 3-5 mile run. My favorite casual events were the Moab half and the St' George full. I miss it 30 lbs later. Hmm, maybe I should start up again?
Hi Dan,
I don't but now that you mention it, probably should. Great post ! : )
Dan.... I remember someone doing a post like this when I was first on AR, already addicted to AR. Gee, I was very addicted to AR also. But that post was only half of what you talked about. The part that you wrote that caught my attention is if it ever did disappear, what would I do? What about my blogs? Great points which has me thinking. thanks
I post a weekly blog on Blogger, and duplicate it on ActiveRain. I usually save those as an MS Word document by date. However, I post additional things to Active Rain and they don't get backed up - but it's a good idea. Thanks for bringing up the topic.
Kristine...There are quite a few here early in the morning or late at night depending on the closest coastline!
Maggie... I'm used to things not working on my early bird schedule.
Sarah... A print function will be nice to share with prospects but I would also like to keep links in tact.
Linda... I have not used Google Doc's but it has been warming on my unwritten to-investigate list.
Luke...I agree it's a scary thought but also think ActiveRain is here for us and won't disappear.
Steven...I hear you.... Been backing up cars decades and come to think of it has been a decade or so since my last computer back-up.
Danny... Never thought about the process but a simple SAVE AS would allow you to stick all the blogs in a directory.
Bill... Probably don't need all the blogs but save the good ones.
Brian...You must be in the minority.... We all know we should back-up but few do.
Renee... What is a "REAL" blog? If I understand correctly copying the address to link is not really solid if the file location changes.
Steve... Sounds like you are halfway there backing up the important ones.
Karen... Didn't hear about that profile bug but I'd want to save mine also.
Marlene... You are the late night lady I was thinking of in line one of my responses.
Thesa... I have a few saved in Word also but haven't been consistent.
Lenn... You are more ambitious than me.. If mine are lost they will stay lost.
Terry... Sounds like we are at the same place... Type most direct, Word at times and need to check out Google Docs.
Ron & Pete.... Men of few words....Blog On...
Roberta... Do you just cut & paste on both blogs so it acts as a back-up? Looks like you are covered if one goes down.
Sister Ann... ha,ha... The westerners forget how early the sun rises in the East.. Did you bury Flat Matt out in the woods?
Teri... It's not about remembering what you wrote... It's about finding your way back to some interesting link.
Sharon... You are correct... We know people many different ways... and some by only face recognition.
Kaushik... 4:30 am... is early but there are times I'm a night owl too... Heck, even go a straight 24 hours at times...
Keith... I never really tried a back-up method but just used SAVE AS and this entire post including graphics is locally stored. I just took up running a few years ago... Go for it.
Kelli... You may not need them all but it's pretty easy to save the good ones.
Jeff... That's when we usually think about it... once its gone.
Paula... Good luck with that To-Do list.... Mine never seems to get Done...
Grant... We seem to have a majority... We all know we should... But few do...
Margaret... You are ahead of the pack.. Having two places is fairly safe.
FINALLY... My normal 12 hour day has stretched to 17 hours... Good Night!
Dan...
Oh. Yes. I back it up on Google Docs. That way if AR goes POOF and My Laptop goes POOF I'll still have my blogs.
The way I see it the odds are astronomical that AR, Google and my laptop will all go POOF at the same time :)
Well I'm not taking a nuclear blast into consideration. LOL.
Note to self...Back up p.c. tomorrow :)
TLW...ROAR!
Dan, I have two hard drives on my computer and I use one of them as a back-up.
Now lets move on to what I really want to know, how was life in the 1600's, and did you still call it a night at 11:00 PM back then?
That thought has crossed my mind. It has been on my to do list for two months now to back up my posts.
I have started a second blog on blogspot.com to raise my web rating on search engines.
But i am sure that active rain backs up their computers. we have nothing to worry about.
TLW...I can see you utilize more than guns for security.
George...1600's were before my time but didn't you jump a ship from Portugal around 1492?
Tim.... We must have the same to-do list of things that don't get done.
Chris... Woke this morning to pounding rain.. with thunder and lighting... what a pain!
Diane...Wish I could sleep late... that would be great!
Ethan... Heard a few things about blogspot.... must be a site that is pretty hot!
Enough of this rhyme...ain't got the time...
Hi Dan...Yes I do back up my blogs, but generally only the ones that I use to send to buuyers and sellers and occassionaly post on my Blogger account blog. When I post there, of course, it createsd it's own back up of sorts.
Regards, Jay
Bro Dan - nope, silly goose! He's about to make his way south, somewhere just south of me, I'm thinking.....it's raining today, not sure I want to get him all wet or me all wet. I did have to fetch him out of the woods twice though.....
Sis
Jay... Thanks for the like to your blog... One of these days I may think about setting up another one.
Sis... No Hurry, I woke to that storm this morning at 4:00 am with thunder, lighting and pounding rain. We are finally starting to see some color around here, April showers are bringing out May flowers..
