This is a great site I discovered a few years ago after a several months of fitness walking evolved into my interest in running. Since I have always been somewhat of a numbers nut tracking my time and mileage was important to me so while searching for a better way to figure out my distance I stumbled in
to America's Running Routes.
Last week while on vacation in Fort Myers Beach was the first time I used the site to select a route. On the west coast of Florida the sun doesn't rise as early as I'm accustom to in New England so I was up early waiting for dawn so I could begin my first run on the sand. Since I was staying towards the northern end of the island I estimated the journey to the starting point of the mapped route and back would be about 7 miles which was what my training plan called for that day.
As the sun attempted to break out a dark cloud seemed to be following me as I approached the 3-1/2 mile mark. The "awesome beach run" listed on America's Running Routes turned out to be a decent change of pace for me since I never run on sand. There is not traffic to worry about but you do need to pay attention to each step. Along the way I passed a few sand castles and seveal deep holes that could easily result in a broken leg.
On the return run the distant rainbow was pointing the way to my pot of gold. Unfortunately to reach that point I did have to endure the wind and rain. My expectation of a flat easy run was not exactly as anticipated but this was only the first of five outings I planned to for each morning of my summer vacation.

Hi Dan - I would say any route on a beach would be a good route. In fact I would probably run to the lounge chair and quit right there.
Hi Dan,
Smart move running on the beach you burn a few extra calories allowing you those few extra beers! LOL! Love the shot of the rainbow! :)
Dan, I love walking on the beach. As a matter of fact I can walk for a few miles, but running, I'll leave that to you.
Bill... The beach was so close there was no room to run! Just a hop, skip and jump.
Suzanne... Not sure if it was a few beers or a bit of dehydration but at one point I was dillusional and swore I saw you running away from me! LOL
Mana... If I ever get out there for another marathon maybe Carl will run while you and Sandra walk a 5k....
Glad to see you made it back safely. Can't wait to see how you do next month! You make that route seem so pleasant---- all I can think about is how much huffing and puffing you do running in the sand and the 100% humidity.
Dan that must be a great new experience. Hope you and Sandra are enjoying your vacation.
What a treat it is to watch these olympic runners. the womens marathon an average of less than 5 1/2 minute miles for 26.2. amazing
Dan...the weather wasn't THAT GREAT but at least you were here before Faye! I'm sorry I couldn't meet up with you. What was I thinking...a listing appointment after returning from vacation?!?! Hope you all enjoyed your trip!
Pat... As you pointed out there was that negative stretch that I will include in my next post. Yesterday I went out for a 12 miler at noon and it felt great in our upper 70 temps without that sticky air.
George... The sea breeze is a nice change and much better than breathing diesel fumes.
James... I haven't caught any of the long distance running but did see the sprints. Recall my first half marathon where the full marathoners were finishing in the same location. Envisioned myself crossing the finish line with the Keynans but I was about 5 minutes ahead of them....
Susie... Maybe we'll get to visit in January. Think I'm suppose to take a break after the Hartford Marathon but looking into a condensed training routine that will prepare me for the Miami Marathon....
Dan, That's a very interesting site. I'll be travelling soon and will have to give a try. Mike
Thanks Dan, I am going to forward this to a few of my friends...
Well Dan, you missed a tropical storm here in FL this weekend. However, Brandon didn't get a DROP of rain believe it or not! Our kids had no school Tuesday after starting Monday. BUT...you would've NO SUN either to tan your hot runner's body! Soo...I guess it's good you came last week!
PS...January is PERFECT for running. Ohh yeah...if we actually get a cold front it is anyhow. LOL
Mike... Maybe our paths will cross if you decide to run a few distance events...
Leslie... The site is great for planning running, walking or cylcling routes.
Susie... I did get a decent tan.... Made my topless running debut on Friday to add a few hours off deep tanning rays. You gonna be ready to run with me in January if I head down your way?
I love to bike but not as passionate about it as you are running :) I wonder if there are any bike routes out there!
