The Running Realtor: Giving away the House for free!

A blend of ramblings about Real Estate & Running around New Haven County and the Connecticut Shoreline

Giving away the House for free!

Welcome to Tee'd Off Tuesday.   Typically when I list a new home I put out an abundance of marketing material but noticed I'm not generating many phone calls.  With my latest listing at 33 Fairlawn Drive in North Haven, CT 06473  I decided not to publish the address as an experiment to see if phone activity increased.

Well, two days after entering the information into our MLS system and making sure I checked "N" so the address would not published by others I see a few sites are giving away the home address of my listing. After a bit of investigation I'm not sure where to place the fault.  Seems the culpret is not the MLS feed but Postlets.com which must have supplied the address to truila.com & Real Estate Shows that is credited with having the property listed at oodle.com

Since my wife is the one that spends her time on Postlets & RSS she may have unknowingly allowed permission to publish the address so at this point I'll just caulk it up to a failed experiment.  Suppose it doesn't really matter if we freely give away the house address anyway..... It isn't really all that difficult to figure out from the map realtor.com provides.

Send her to bed without dinner Dano! That'll teach her. That woman is seriously out of control. What kind of husband lets this crap go on under his own roof? That's what I want to know!!!

Lesson learned. Not all systems have address/no address options. Yet, even with limited control over information I believe that more exposure on the internet is a benefit that we can't ignore.

Some agents in my area use the no address technique. I have never tried it, but it seems to work for them.

Dan - Interesting how you can work around anything! At least you know the results...

Jennifer... With her eating habits missing dinner wouldn't teach her much... Maybe I'll withhold sweets!

Vickie... I agree the more exposure the better, just trying to find ways to make sure my phone rings from all the exposure instead of getting lost in the system.

Kevin... This was my first attempt to experiment with the address. Normally I write a blog with the address in the title so my page comes up on the top spot!  Makes no sense if I don't publish the address and someone else get top billing for their site.

Lindsey... Yes, when there's a will there's a way!

Boy am I going to have my hands full with Jennifer....

I wonder how that experiment would of turned out, perhaps you'll have to try it again soon Dano.

I seriously want to hear your feedback on this experiment. I get different opinions on this all the time from my realtors.

Dan are you feeling OK???  You must be sick iIf this is the best you can do for Tee'd Off Tuesday, because I know you have not mellowed out that much :) :)

Joe... Since the address is already out there I most likely won't get many calls asking where the house is located so they can drive by.  Based on my findings yesterday I will probably continue to publish the address everywhere.

Missy... You are most likely correct.

Mana... No,  she had a roasted beast for dinner and cookies for a before bed snack.

George... As I told you way back when..... I've always been the mellow one.. the calming force when others get overly excited with emotionally out of control thinking.

one of the best parts of AR is that we get to see how Real Estate is practced in different parts of the country.  Here in Miami, we don't even have the Y/N address option, all addresses are shown.....
