The Running Realtor: The Running Realtor's TNT Update

A blend of ramblings about Real Estate & Running around New Haven County and the Connecticut Shoreline

The Running Realtor's TNT Update

My first month with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training has been hectic.  Being in the Real Estate Business gave me one big advantage over some of my other teammates.  Since being a Realtor involves a fair amount of marketing I already had systems in place to deal with mass mailings.  The first week I spent composing a letter and printing my initial mailing to 150 friends and past clients.  Concurrently I submitted a press release to a few local newspapers and both acted fast in publishing the news.

Since I am so heavily involved in on-line activities I was surprised by the reluctance of some people to contribute using a credit card on the secure donation site but learned during my second week at the TNT fund-raiser workshop that we should include a return envelope in our mailing.  My second batch of letters went out to 150 relatives, neighbors and acquaintances along with a return envelope but the response rate was not substantially different.

With all this fund-raising activity and the rainiest February on record I have managed to run 100 miles since joining the team.  I also finally learned how to produce a YouTube show.  Hope this inspires donations!

Lindsey... I thought fundraising would be the challenging part but the people at the Leukemia Society told us not to even worry because all we had to do was ask and people would give...  Figured I'd do three mailings per contact requesting donations before I start to worry... :-)

Lisa... Yes.... I little tougher to develop a theme than I expected but I thought having a little video would make email more interesting.  If all goes well this post will be sent to me via my RSS feed and then I can forward it to people.

Mana... I hope we're not talking about your leg again!!!  Since it took a few attempts for my video to play I assume it was giving you trouble.  That is the downside of YouTube when it gets bogged down.

Dan, it does not matter if it is a secure site, the three digits that they as for from the back of the card should never be given out, I don't understand why they insist on getting these digits, the card number should be all that they need.

Taking a break from my dance rehearsal (that trio number!) just to stop in and say "Hey!"

Kitty is better :)

[watch it buddy - I can hear those cogs turning and I DON'T recommend saying it!!]

George.... I know your stance on the CVV2 code but the entire purpose of the number is to increase security when the card is not present during the transaction.  Your theory that is should never be divulged defeats the entire reason the number exists.  The numbers prove you have the card for verification of on-line or telephone purchases and are prohibited from being stored by the vendor.  You are certainly entitled to whatever opinion you have but there is no need to spread your personal fear when I am fundraising for a highly reputable cause and collections are being cleared through one of the top running sites in the nation.

Jennifer... You never did tell me how the cat was injured but glad it was cared for quickly.

Dan - Very nice video... I didn't realize you had already run a 100 miles...I exhausted just thinking about it.

My Jennifer - How's that dance routine coming along?

Dan, purpose of my comment was certainly not to discourage people form contributing to a VERY worthy cause, bot to respond to you statement that you were  "surprised by the reluctance of some people to contribute using a credit card on the secure donation site".  My comment was in response to that, since I am one of those people.  I will be sending something through the mail.

Dan,

It has been 7 years since I joined team in training with my sister.  We found that the letters and asking for donations was tough.  We ended up doing a garage sale and all our family and friends donated items that netted us over $2000.  My sister ran the Anchorage marathon while I recovered from a training injury.  Good Luck!

Sandra... The miles add up when you're running 25 a week... To put the marathon in perspective with all the time I'm running each week it isn't quite reach the finish line of the race.

George... I understand you meant no harm but just wanted to toss out my opinion to hopefully calm any fear of donating online.  I'm in your age range so I recall the "old days" when credit card fraud was a much bigger problem.  Now I consider online purchases much safer than the days of carbon copy imprints and do the majority of my banking and bill paying online.

Joanne... When the weather around here warms up I do plan on clearing some unused items out in a tag sale to raise cash but think it somewhat defeats the purpose of fundraising if I have to contribute most of the time and money personally. Have you been consistently involved with TNT each year?   My thinking at this point is to stick with them and do an event each year even though it is a huge commitment of time and money.

Dan, My leg still aches, but I was talking about your show which I can see it's working now.

Dan, good luck with the fundraising and the training. TNT had a strong presence in the last two Marathons I ran. I thought I was the only knucklehead Realtor, good to see another runner. Go Team!
