Not sure why but my viewpoint seems to be opposite most people on many subjects. Halloween is one of those special days where I tend to be heading in a different direction and this year I am questioning my own logic.
The background on this story goes back 15 years or maybe more. I cannot help but notice trends and I was amazed at how "cheap" the people got year after year with the candy. Full size went to half size that lead to fun size which ended with what to me looked more like spec size.
Those that know me also realize I have a hefty appetite. Since I enjoy eating and like to have fun I decided to take my treats in another direction. For a few years I gave out the full size Hershey Bars, that was like the jackpot when I was a kid.
As candy got smaller I went larger... It dawned on my that beyond the "jackpot" were GIANT SIZE bars that were only sold individually in the supermarket for about a buck a bar.
Chocolate has skyrocketed and last year the cost was about 1.39 each and I'd toss in 10 a week while food shopping until I had 50-60 in stock.... This year my usual b
ars were 1.69 but they had 8-packs of fun size on sale for a dollar. Figured I give an entire package to each Trick-or-Treater.
Now my table is filling up with treats and I am second guessing my logic. All these years my personal protest to miniature Halloween candy has been to go larger... This year a nagging little voice, actually an imaginary voice since I've never heard the fitness queen coo, is in my head questioning whether I am being nice to the children giving them candy or helping feed obesity by overindulging them.
So.... Am I sweet provided a jackpot for the children or an I foolishly feeding them fat? Now that I'm more aware of the fun of fitness I may change the treats. Wonder if Granola Bars will get me egged....

Yes, you should use Sarah's wrappers. ;o)
Heck, they walked to your house, give 'em candy! That was exercise.
"nagging lttle voice" those are fighting words....
About the candy there is something really cool about the full size candy bars, kids will think you rule! I say go ahead and give them what they want....they will be bouncing off the walls but not yours! If you don't give it to them someone else will, the danger is in the left over candy around the house. LOL! ;)
What this from the fitness queen - someone needs to wash your mouth out with veggies.....lol
Sarah - always use those lovely little candy wrappers! Love Them
Dan, geeeeeeee I did not notice that you have a "hefty appetite" :)
My only question is what do you have as your "two sides" with your candy bar :)
Sandra,
I'll take the veggies like a big girl...much better than soap! LOL!
Thesa... We do have the wrappers for Open House candy but I'd be reluctant to commercialize the kids fun on Halloween.
Jennifer... The larger ones seem to have more appeal but a double dose of the smaller size might be more satisfying.
Sarah... Not so sure about the wrapper reception in this case. Glad a mountain mama approves of candy.
Suzanne.... Not fighting words when used with the CMA technique... In this instance Nagging Little Voice was canceled out with the Fitness Queen Coo..... So sweet and soft...
Sandra... Don't think those little bags of veggie chips would have the same WOW affect that lights in the little ones eyes..
George... I can think of two sides but this is a public post..
Jennifer... Huh?
Jennifer... It all comes back to business... Gotta pay for the sweets!
Sandi... I can still surprise you? Yes... even I know enough to mix it up a little.. Don't want to get known as all work and no fun... The kids really do light up... Only real problem is sometimes their little pumkin container is so small the bars don't fit!
Mana... Glad to know California hasn't gone anti-candy yet.... I continute the Good Stuff!
Dan--We go for the big bars for the neighborhood kids....But we live in a small neighborhood. Kids love the big treats. We used to give Fruit Rollups and never got egged...Of course with all of the sugar they are like candy anyway. :)
I'm with Jen...the bigger, the better!
Egged, papered...what's the difference? Be safe, my friend...give the critters what they want!
Bob... Haven't sampled myself... honey style is best otherwise it gets a bit salty...
Teri... I do keep a box or two of regular size for large gangs of older kids just coming for the Jackpot.
Teri.. Yea, I get to be fun for a day..
Lisa... Actually looked at the labels and giant bar has more calories then the 8-pack so by giving out the whole package of candy that appears bigger it does save calories... And since the get 8 portions even if they take them two at a time it provides several satisfying snacks.
Dan,
I'm impressed with your being able to run, and Exercise often. I wish I had the energy for it, but nothing but Sheer Exhaustion for me. Now!!!! I think i'm going Trick or Treating at your House, Good Candy :0) that reminds me of how my wife shops Months Early for Christmas Gifts.. It's a great Idea.
Take Care Dan,
Tom Weiss
All right. I be the solo taking the other side... go for the small ones, PLEASE. I actually throw away half of my kids candy when they aren't looking because
a) it is bad for their teeth
b) they don't need all that sugar
I do let them have some but the big ones, no way jose!!
Please, don't throw tomatoes at me.
Tom... Candy shopping is easy in advance.. Christmas gets tougher every years to the point I'd rather just take a weeks vacation and forget about all the junk we don't need.... But.... I'm in the minority. Christmas items are already in the stores around here... It's nuts.
Ginger...Your "other side" opinion is what I expected to be the majority. It takes years to shift public acceptance and I thought the candy issue was a bit further along.
FULL SIZE CANDY BARS means you never have to worry about having your house get egged or toilet papered!! You will eternally be KNOWN for your generousity for the kids at Halloween!
KEEP IT UP!! (fight the nagging little voice) If I lived anywhere near Connecticut I would make a special trip to stop at your house!!
Susie... You know she'll never over power me.... Unless I let her !!! LOL
Judy... That thought has crossed my mind but I don't want to commercialize the kids outing. Always wondered why know one came up with the idea of label the source of candy so there wouldn't be as much concern with tampering.... Maybe someday... In any event I think you are searching for Sarah's Sweet Idea.
