Dan Cummings - The Running Realtor: Cartoons and Advertising

A blend of ramblings about Real Estate & Running around New Haven County and the Connecticut Shoreline

Cartoons and Advertising

Not sure how I woke up with this thought but I was thinking about people that use children in their advertising.  That evolved into my reflection of a cartoon I had made years ago when my kids played hockey and needed to sell ad space for the awards banquet.

Since I like to be a little creative I didn't want the standard ad that most parents purchased. Glancing thought the previous year book showed page after page of "Congratulations  BILLYBOB - Love Mom & Dad"

Fortunately I remember things quite well and recalled while Christmas shopping a few months earlier there was a cartoonist at the mall. At the time I was enjoying the success of my first career and remembered thinking his rate for custom work was very reasonable.

Now that school is back in session a new season of AD Books is approaching. Usually when I get a request to place an ad to support some cause I'm busy and miss the deadline.  This year I'm planning ahead.

While working in the engineering field for a quarter century there was an old saying that still rings true. "No matter how loud the beancounters scream they cannot have creativity on demand."  Suppose there area similar sayings for authors suffering from writers block or athletes in a slump.

Brings me to my question - Any Ideas..?  I need a kick start!  Thinking something funny and memorable that is running and real estate related that can be used when children are selling space in an ad book to raise money for their school or sporting event.

Hi Dan,

I like the idea of having a cartoonist draw up your running man logo...or you and Sandra? Now that would be real cute and it would grab attention because its original. :)

James... Blog cartoons are also nice but could get a little pricey when customized.

Suzanne... I can't even get Sandra to walk so looks like the Running Man will be going solo... Can't use a body double because that would be deceiving,  suppose I could go with a running caveman theme and drag her by the hair... :-)     Would that look like a step backwards for women's rights?

Dan-  Did you actually draw that cartoon above??  I'm impressed!  I'm always in awe of people with that kind of talent...

I'm not great on the creative end... but what about you running, carrying the school mascot...  what IS the school mascot?

Sandi... No, I'm not the artist... Found a cartoonist at the mall that did the drawing. Whatever I draw needs a Mathematical base consisting of nice straight lines and curves... never been a good freehand sketcher.

Since I work several towns the mascot would change for various schools plus there are other types of non-academic ad books that come up.  Was hoping to have one real estate type theme that would work for all cases.

Dan - you are skating on thin ice here - using a body double? Dragging a woman by her hair.  Better watch it Mister. Forgot about that cartoon of the boys - didn't they look sweet.

Dan can't help you here, I thing I was a sleep when they past out the creativity talent, come to think about it I must have been a sleep for a few other as well.  But I am sure that you will get plenty of ideas from others before the night is over.

Your boys look ADORABLE!!  How long ago was that and how old are they now?

The cartoon idea sounds GREAT but right now...I'm dry on ideas for the ad book---I'll sleep on it!  My  kids are still young and have worn me out today!  LOL

Wish I could help you out, but I am so tired off to bed. I'm up at 5:30 a.m. so sleep is early for me. I see you're already apart of the writers block so that won't help.

Suzanne... Somehow I knew that.....LOL

Sandra... I said "can't" use a body double and I know a woman's hair can't be touched.... Might expose roots...

George... Don't think many people are in working mode at night.... you gotta wake up with the inspiration.

Susie... Since the artist knew enough to date it I can say with certainty it was the spring of '92.  They are now 26 and 28... They are catching up with me....

Missy... I know that feeling... Usually I'm climbing into the shower 5:30...

I love this idea - My son and daughters wanted to kill me their senior year - because their ad - well it was a baby photo and the caption read something like my how you have grown.... they about died when they saw it... now that they are grown I have not been asked lately - but I will start thinking and maybe hit them up.... living where I went to highschool a lot of the parents of these kids were my clasmates - great idea.

Dan - Between the name and 'The Running Man' nickname, you are an ingenious ad in the making.

The cartoon of the boys is very cool BTW.  You may want to hit up Bob Carney, he seems to have a creative and artistic flare for this stuff that may get those juices flowing.

Dan--I just go for the standard "Thinking of buying...selling" line with web address etc. Your cartoon idea is very creative...I have until December before the schools I sponsor start asking...You have challenged me to come up with something good this year! :o)
