If you are looking to improve your running performance try a group run. The New Haven Runners are the 25th largest meetup group worldwide with over ninety members. On any given Satrudray morning you'll find about a dozen people ready to go at various paces and distances.
Our morning route sounds impressive running through three towns but most of the time we run a max of 8.75 miles round trip. Depending on the desired distance for the day many members turn around early. Going the full length is done in about 90 minutes. On occasion some members may do a double or some combination for increased mileage.
Beginning at East Rock Park on the corner of Livingston & Cold Spring Street we run north on Livingston Street, turn right on East Rock Road and left on Park Drive bringing us out of New Haven and into Hamden. The run continues past the entry leading to the summit of East Rock and continues to Davis Street where we turn left towards Hartford Turnpike.
Running north we stay on Hartford Turnpike until it intersects with Dixwell Avenue in North Haven unless we turnaround early. The traffic light at Ridge Road is just beyond the two mile marker so turning here makes it a 4 mile day. At Sebec Street we reach 2.5 miles for those that only want a five mile run. The three mile marker falls between Jackson Road & Fennbrook Drive and the turn around point for a 10k run is a few steps further at the Vineyard Road triangle. Mile 3.5 is near School Drive so turning there results in a 7 miler, mile 4 is a few more blocks at School Lane.

The age group of participants spans from college to middle-age with some quick paced runners traveling at under 8 minute miles while the majority train at a pace of 10-11 minutes per mile. Currently running begins at 8:00 am Saturday morning, check the calender and feel free to join us.

Dan - My you have been busy - very impressive post. I love your maps.
Hi Dan,
I agree you do a nice job with maps! Ohh...the running I'm impressed, the group sounds like agood motivator. I want to start running, but my knees don't like to run. The elliptical is good because of the low impact, but I want to run!!! LOL! :)
Sandra... Sometimes the information flows quickly although this has been in the works for days...
Suzanne... I can speak volumes on knees... When I first started I was in severe pain... stopped running to rest my knee for a week before my first 5k race and hobbled around in agony for a week after the run. Bought new shoes, wore those elastic knee supports, iced after every run.... Came down to slowly building up miles and stretching after each run.... Pick a date for your first 5k and I'll run it with you.... Still have time if you want a Nov/Dec race... Otherwise it'll have to wait for spring.
I am not sure I understand that chart - but it looks pretty hilly to me - I would die - I would just lay down and die - I think I have hit the end of my rope and am having a heart attack now... if I tried this I would seriously die.
Thesa.... It does have hills but they work pretty good at developing buns of steel.... Guess that's why I'm such a hard-ass.... LOL
George... You must be getting forgetful, I've never been one to surround myself with sweaty guys...
Thesa... From what I'm reading it's more like you are attracting buyers instead of making enemies...
Susie... When I get down your way we'll have to go for a run..... Unless you'd prefer jumping right to desert... Suzanne hasn't talked you out of ice cream, right? :-)
Dan -- in all my years running long distance has never been my gig. The longest i have ever run is 3 miles in like 19 or 20 minutes and I said never again. I like sprints. I had my knee scoped a few years back and started riding bike afterwards --love it and a lot less ponding on those knees.
Keep up the good work. I am going toward the long lean look to get those abs like the group picture.
Ariz... Thought the speed of sprinting was much tougher on the knees.
Susie... Guess my fingers don't always keep-up.... Lost the "s" but I won't lose you in a Florida Desert....
