New Haven Connecticut has a long tradition of fine pizza since the American Pie was born here. By far the most well known places are Sally's & Pepe's of Wooster Street. Presidents and Performers can often be spotted in the area, some seeking the limelight others quietly waiting inline.
During his presidential campaign Ronald Reagan satisfied himself with a Pepe's Pie and when Bill Clinton comes to town he enjoys putting on an apron to make a Pepe's Pizza before sitting down at The Presidential Table. When Robin Williams stop by to see if Pepe's could take care of him he was whisked off to table 10 where he graciously signed autographs while awaiting his feast. Bill Murry, Danny DeVito & even the Fonz prefer Pepe's.
Ol' Blue Eyes was a Sally's fan but not because he was a ladies man, Frank Sinatra's personal assistant was Sal's brother Tony. Sally's attracts other members of the musical crowd including Glenn Miller & Michael Bolton.
The New Haven Debate as to which is better, Pepe's or Sally's will never end. I'm not a fan of long lines and slow service so when in New Haven my selection is Modern! Being a native of New Haven County I can find a good pizza in most of the surrounding towns. Growing up in West Haven one of the favorites was Zuppardi's. To this day I still hear stories passed down to the children about an early date with my wife. Being a guy with a hefty appetite I always ordered one size - Large! Well, my wife wasn't much of an eater and one slice was her portion, of course being the practical & thrifty type I couldn't let it go to waste. Since we were heading out for a movie after dinner boxing it wasn't an option so I finished it myself.. Never expected it to be considered an Amazing Feat!
On the other side of New Haven I used to stop at Sorrento's in Hamden or Angelo's in North Haven but after moving into a new buildings I don't think they retained their original quality. Bilmonte's Pizza Castle was another Hamden favorite but sold out to Eli's, only been there once.
That gives you seven choices for pizza around here. Enjoy!

Dan, I have been to Pepe's, Sally's, and Modern Pizza, all three are excellent but my favorite is Pepe's. The lines for all three, especially Pepe's and Sally's can be very long, so I call ahead for take out. The first time that I tried calling Sally's for take out I was on the phone trying to get through for an hour. Finally I decided to just drive there and order. When I stepped up the the counter it became clear why I could not get through, the phone was off the hook. It was a Saturday and it seems that on most days, especially the weekend, the phone gets taken off the hook at 4:00 PM. Also so if you want reservations on a weekend you need to call two weeks ahead of time, I found that amazing for a pizza place.
For anyone who has not been to these pizza houses, they are well worth the drive or wait!!!!!!!
Maybe we'll start a pizza carnival!
George... I'm not cut out for planning my meals two weeks in advance and if I'd get cranky standing in a long line when I'm hungry!
Chris...Thought you discarded that idea when you wrote about Luna Pizza. Think I was away when you started the Ice Cream Carnival so I never really understood the concept.
Dan,
Looks like you have this pizza thing under control, Sandra gets one piece you get the rest! LOL! Which one offers the low fat, low carb pizza? :)
Teri... Sounds like you have the one slice limit... I was starving as I was writing!
Rhonda... Think they opened the first franchise in Fairfield County but haven't heard any reviews.
Sandi... You'll have to come to the east coast, we'll do lobster rolls for lunch & pizza pie for desert!
Dan
Sally's is my favorite..but what no Bull Dog...many years ago it tasted excellent as we ran down the street from Rudy's...but then again long time ago and I am sure the beer taste buds assisted
Tom.... I've never really hung with the Yalie crowd....
Ginger... If Thesa ever makes a road trip maybe you and Sandi can tag along... How Appropriate!
YUMMMMM!!! There is no such thing as a BAD PIZZA! AND...it's worth every calorie for an extra slice or two! PLUS...you can't drink "water" with good pizza so bring on the coke! I've already had dinner and now I'm hungry after reading this Dan.
PS...I'll eat the leftovers for breakfast! Shhh...don't' tell Suzanne!
